The Pigeon Valley UIP works to fulfil its mandate and execute its Unite, Improve, Uplift goals. Chairperson CindyMay Wang gives an update:

What is the Pigeon Valley UIP’s key focus areas for 2025.

Cleaning, greening and safety. Our aim is to be the bridge where the municipality lacks capacity. We hope to take back our neighbourhood so that we can all enjoy a litter-free, safe space to live, work and play.

What is Glenwood’s biggest challenge?

Glenwood’s unique character is its mix of people - from students to families, rich to poor. This makes for a vibrant community, culture and energy. Working towards a neighbourhood in which all people feel safe has been the toughest challenge.

What is your biggest security success?

We now have two 24 hour security patrol vehicles in the precinct. We’ve installed 16 independent camera sites, each consisting of an ANPR (Automatic Number Plate Recognition) camera and 2 CCTV cameras with AI alarm capability.

What has been your biggest success with respect to cleaning?

We have a team to pick litter once a week and deal with overloaded public bins and dumping. New and repaired litter bins have been added in Meyrick Bennett Park and the old Tram Station; dog litter dispensers have been installed in Meyrick Bennett and Bedford Parks. DSW gives us advance warning of any collection disruptions and a weekly supply of refuse bags for collection of litter in streets and parks.

How have you succeeded with greening?

We are planting indigenous plants on road islands to reduce the need for mowing. New gardens have been established – Gateway Gardens, Ayott Triangle Gardens, Fulham Bakery Triangle Gardens, Ormiston Triangle Gardens, King George V Ave Gardens and Bedford Park Gardens. We’re doing regular grass cutting of road centre medians and  smaller parks. We’re trimming and removing  fallen trees and tree limbs in our parks.

What tools or platforms are you using to engage with the community?

The following platforms are available:

  1. The PVUIP WhatsApp chat group

  2. The PVUIP WhatsApp info group

  3. The PVUIP WhatsApp crime group

  4. Visit the PVUIP office at 306A Cato Road, Glenwood, or call 031 205 1269.

How can residents get involved?

We have a volunteer-based steering committee and people can volunteer time at our office. or sit in on one of the subcommittees. Please do get in touch with us (our details are on this page).

What are your 3 major projects at the moment?

A paved walkway and bollards along King George V Avenue. Installation of more security cameras throughout the precinct repair of asphalt and concrete pavements.
