Two people shot in shoot-out with police

Last night, in Congela, a robbery suspect and an innocent bystander were shot in a shoot-out between the police and the robbery suspect.

According to dRK Emergency Medical Services spokesperson Cait Hagerman, at 18:20 last night, the dRKEMS control centre received information that a shooting had occurred on Sydney Road.

“It is alleged that a robbery had taken place earlier near the Dalton taxi rank, and SAPS were attempting to apprehend a suspect when the suspect started shooting at SAPS members,” said Hagerman.

In return, SAPS opened fire, killing the male suspect, aged approximately 40 years old.

“During this incident, it is alleged a bystander who was trying to purchase traditional medicine was also shot,” said Hagerman.

Hagerman said the dRKEMS paramedics arrived on the scene and declared the wounded suspect deceased on Blake Road and then were directed to Sydney Road where the bystander was found.

“The alleged bystander had sustained one gunshot wound and was stabilised on scene, then he was transported to the closest facility for further treatment,” said Hagerman.

Hagerman said SAPS were in attendance and will be conducting a thorough investigation into this incident.
